Following the departure of Jack London from Jack London & The Sparrows, the remaining four members continued as The Sparrows. Original keyboardist Art Ayre was soon replaced by Goldy McJohn. With the addition of John Kay on lead vocals and a move to Columbia Records in 1966, they altered their name to be simply "The Sparrow". Following the departure of Dennis Edmonton in 1967 for a solo career as Mars Bonfire, The Sparrow would change their name to Steppenwolf.
