American blues and jazz pianist, composer and publisher. (1883-1937) Considered by some as the originator of the Boogie Woogie piano style. Was a successful songwriter and had hits with such tracks as "Houston Blues", "Muscle Shoals Blues" and "New Orleans Hop Scop Blues". Brother of [a353519] and [a307399]. Father of [a1194999]. Released the recording "The Rocks" in 1923 under the name of Clay Custer. Partnered with [a307393] in 1914 to form a New Orleans-based publishing company which after the closing of the Storyville district in 1917 would be moved to Chicago.
