(There is some dispute over where she was born, many sources say Detroit, Michigan and she did reside there but her Michigan Social Security registration in October 1939 states birthplace as Wilburton, Oklahoma). Name frequently misspelled on records as "Newsome" (actually spelled "Newsom" after first husband Carl Allen Newsom, Jr.) First known professional appearance (article June 28, 1941, Detroit Tribune) was as singer with King Allen And His Royal Sultans. Began using the "Chubby" nickname in 1944. Debut single "Hip Shakin' Mama" released in 1949. Last known recording session in 1957. Moved to Kansas City, Missouri sometime after 1978. Died there September 13, 2003 (aged 83) according to an obituary from the September 17, 2003 Kansas City Star.
