Theodor Leschetizky (1830–1915) was a Polish pianist, music educator and composer from Łańcut, then Landshut, in the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria (Austrian Poland). His father, a gifted performer and music teacher from Vienna, gave Theodor first piano lessons. Young musician continued his education in Vienna under Carl Czerny. At the age of eleven, Leschetizky performed Czerny's piano concert with Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart (the son of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) conducting. Theodor started tutoring his first students at the age of fifteen, and by eighteen, he was known as a virtuoso pianist well beyond Vienna. He studied composition with Simon Sechter, a prominent professor who also mentored many other famous musicians.
In 1852, his friend Anton Rubinstein invited Theodor Leschetizky to take a teacher's position at the court of the Grand Duchess Yelena Pavlovna in St. Petersburg, Russia. He became one of the founders of the St. Petersburg Conservatoire of Music in 1862 and remained there as a head of the piano department until 1877.
After returning to Vienna, Leschetizky established one of the most prominent private piano schools in the world. Some of his notable students included Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Artur Schnabel, Fannie Bloomfield-Zeisler, Mieczyslaw Horszowski, Alexander Brailowsky, Benno Moiseiwitsch, Elly Ney, Ossip Gabrilowitsch, and Mark Hambourg.
