John Denver was the successor of Chad Mitchell in The Chad Mitchell Trio. Just because of the fame they were allowed to keep the "Mitchell" in the band name but had to remove the "Chad". They recorded two studio albums and a live album. By the time the live album, "Alive", was recorded, David Boise had replaced Joe Frazier. After the departure of Mike Kobluk, the group became Denver, Boise & Johnson.
