    Stephen Spender (February 28, 1909 – July 16, 1995) was an English poet and essayist who concentrated on themes of social injustice and the class struggle in his work.

    His Federico García Lorca translations, made in collaboration with J.L. Gili, appeared in 1939.
    Spender was made a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 1962 and knighted in 1983.
