American blues singer and guitarist.
Born: about 1903 in Itta Bena, Leflore County, Missisippi
Died: after 1942, unknown location
From 1939 through 1942 played with his friend Tommy McClennan. He recorded only 16 songs for Bluebird (two remained unissued), but it has been said that he was an influence for many notable blues and rock musicians. There is only one known picture of Petway, a publicity photo from 1941. His birth name may have been Pettyway, Pitway, Petaway, or similar. There is no record of Petway's death. The last record of his public life is a quote from David "Honeyboy" Edwards: "nobody I know heard what become of him."
