He got his nickname from "Old Original Kokomo Blues" (a song about the Kokomo brand of coffee) recorded in 1934. His first 78 for Victor in 1930 was released as by Gitfiddle Jim, but his numerous recordings for Decca 1934-1938 were all released as by Kokomo Arnold. He worked mostly outside music in the Chicago area from 1941.
