Born: c.1941 in Dakar, Senegal.

Senegalese drummer, cultural historian, entertainment consultant. His surname is pronounced 'Chahm'. Thiam started studying music at the age of 8 and received his college degree with emphasis in percussion, singing and dancing. He formed his own company of performer and traveled throughout Senegal, later joining the National Ballet of Senegal as coordinator of music and choreography as well as performer. He was discovered in Senegal by nationally known dancer and choreographer, Katherine Dunham who was director of the performing arts training center at Southern Illinois University.

Father of hip-hop artist Akon.
