During the 1940s, Les was a member of bands led by Raymond Scott, Charlie Spivak and Harry James, sometimes finding himself alongside his brother saxophonist Larry Elgart. He and his brother formed their own orchestra in 1945. Elgart charted with the song "Main Title (Man with the Golden Arm)" in 1956, which hit #56 on the U.S. charts.
