American jazz saxophonist and bandleader.
Born March 20, 1922 in New London, Connecticut, USA.
Died August 29, 2017 in Sarasota, Florida, USA.
Brother of trumpeter Les Elgart.
He and his brother formed their own orchestra in 1945. While touring in a band with his brother in the 1950s, they were approached to write the theme song “Bandstand Boogie” for the Philadelphia television show that would eventually go national as “American Bandstand.” Then in 1982, Elgart released a big-band and swing medley with his band Larry Elgart & His Manhattan Swing Orchestra called “Hooked on Swing” that reached No. 31 on the U.S. Billboard charts. The instrumental was a medley of a dozen swing jazz hits.
