In the early 80's he played with La Porta Band where he mixed the traditional folk with jug music and began writing own songs that combined the novelty of jug music lyrics with a more rocking approach that would later define his style as a solo artist, In the late 80's he became an arena rocker and and famed for his true rock'n'roll lifestyle. In the 90's he teamed up with Lars Lilholt and Allan Olsen in Dalton, a trio known for chaotic tours involving drunk performances and even fights off stage between the members. In the 00's Madsen turned more to painting.
