Swedish indie rock band from Gothenburg.
Broder Daniel, often refereed to as BD, was formed in 1989 by singer Henrik Berggren and bassist Daniel Gilbert when they were in junior high school. They were soon after joined by drummer Håkan Hellström.
Their big breakthrough came in 1998 when director Lukas Moodysson included three of their songs in the soundtrack for the movie Fucking Åmål (English title: Show Me Love).
They are largely regarded as a cornerstone of Swedish alternative music during the 1990s, even though the band has proven to be quite unstable ever since the beginning, with members leaving the band every few years. Their song Shoreline is considered a modern classic in Sweden, with the phrase "play Shoreline" ("spela Shoreline"in Swedish) commonly referenced in public.
After guitarist Anders Göthberg's suicide in 2008, the remaining members chose to disband the band. A final gig at Way Out West festival in Gothenburg was held later that year as a tribute to Göthberg. In 2014 a monument, The Shoreline memorial, dedicated the memory of Göthberg and Broder Daniel was put up close to the site of the band's final concert in the park Slottsskogen in central Gothenburg.
In 2018 the band got inducted into the Swedish Music Hall of Fame where part of the justification read:
"Songs like Underground, When We Were Winning and the indie march Shoreline became the soundtrack for an entire generation."
