Sofia Vembo was a famous Greek singer and film & stage actress. Her artistic career extended from the interwar period to the first post-war years and the 1950s. Born on 10th of February 1910 in Gelibolu (also known as Gallipoli), Ottoman Empire - Died on 11th of March 1978 in Athens, Greece.
She started her artistic career by chance in 1930, singing at the 'Astoria' club in Thessaloniki. Her first recording was released in 1934. With the declaration of war in 1940, she took over the animating of the Greek soldiers at the front with patriotic and satirical songs, while she starred in reviews that adapted their theme to the current war.
In 1942, she & Μίμης Τραϊφόρος got engaged in Egypt, where they had fled during the years of the German Occupation. They married in 1957. Before their marriage, circa 1954, they had adopted the 4-year old Χάιδο Βέμπο.
She was called the "Songstress of Victory" because of the national songs she performed during the Greco-Italian war of 1940.
