It was originally called (in Russian):

Большой детский хор Центрального телевидения и Всесоюзного радио СССР (сокращённо — БДХ СССР, Большой детский хор).
Big children's choir of the All-Union radio and Central TV. Abbreviated - (БДХ, Big Children's Choir) - Soviet and Russian choir.
Formed in 1970.

The organizer and permanent, for 38 years, the leader of the choir was the laureate of the Lenin Komsomol Prize (1980), People's Artist of the RSFSR (1983), People's Artist of the USSR (1990), laureate of the Moscow City Hall Prize in the field of literature and art (1996), laureate of the State Prize Russian Federation (2002), professor and conductor Victor Popov. He was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples (1994) and the award of France - "Commander of the Order of Literature and Art."

Since September 1, 2008, the choir has been named after its creator.
