American jazz ensemble.
During the existence of Woody Herman And His Orchestra between 1936 and 1987, the band existed in a couple of reincarnations. While the first stages up to 1954 can be deduced clearly, the time of 1954 and later was much more complicated to identify. First, there were several names for the orchestra at the same time. Second, those names didn't describe a continuous time range in which the ensemble was performing and recording.
The name 'Woody Herman Band' was mainly used in two time periods. It occurred the first time in September 1954, when [m464720] was recorded in L.A. Later, it reappeared in January 1978, when [m981390] was recorded.
