German musicologist, editor and composer, born 15 August 1822 in Dessau, Germany and died 2 May 1892 in Leipzig, Germany. He was an important contributer to the Bach Gesellschaft edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. In 1880 he became director of the Thomanerchor in Leipzig. He was the granson of Friedrich Wilhelm Rust.
