The Belgian Utopia Ensemble unites five singers who have enjoyed years of experience with internationally renowned ensembles. Since its foundation in 2015, Utopia has performed on various domestic and foreign stages. Besides Laus Polyphoniae in Antwerp and MA festival Bruges, they were guests at festivals in Utrecht, Regensburg, Warsaw, Prague and Fribourg. Utopia Ensemble took its name from the book by Thomas More, who started writing this work in Antwerp in 1515. Inspired by the interesting and innovative ideas in the book, Utopia also wants to play a social role. Amongst its projects and collaborations it organises the annual “Utopia Festival Day", with a variety of music, visual arts, film and photography, and in addition several lectures and debates on social themes. As 'ensemble in residence' in the beautiful Antwerp Church of Saint-Paul’s, Utopia has a wonderful home base for concerts and new projects. Utopia specialises in vocal music from the 16th century, always looking for a profound expressiveness. The starting point of polyphonic singing, where all voices are equally important, fits Utopia like a glove and results in a rich and homogeneous sound. MEMBERS: Michaela Riener (mezzo), Bart Uvyn (countertenor), Adriaan De Koster (tenor), Lieven Termont (baritone) and Guillaume Olry (bass).
