Initially founded as Dead Silent in 1987 in Nassjö, Sweden by Dregen (on guitar) and Peder Carlsson (on drums). The two were joined by Mattias Blomkvist (on guitar), who was fired after few rehearsals as Johan Blomqvist (on guitar) took his place in the group. Tobias Fischer (on vocals & bass) completed the line-up and at some point they changed band's name to Tyrant. They played several live shows in their local area and recorded rough demo tapes. After seeing them perform in 1989, Nicke Borg started to hang around with the band and soon joined them, initially as a bass player, but soon Fischer was kicked out and Nicke became also the vocalist. Fischer went on to be a professional photographer and web designer in Stockholm, continuing to work occasionally with his old band mates. At this point Blomkvist also switched to bass and Nicke, as their new frontman, handled both guitar and vocals. They changed their name to Backyard Babies and recorded two more demos and did a national tour of Sweden.
