American jazz saxophonist (alto, tenor) and composer, born February 25, 1929 in Portsmouth, Virginia, USA, died April 28, 2007.

Newsom played in the NBC Orchestra on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, for which he later became assistant director. He joined the band in 1962, and left it when Carson retired in 1992. He also performed and arranged for musicians such as Benny Goodman, Charlie Byrd, Woody Herman, Vincent Lopez and Louis Bellson.
