Timpuri Noi

About

Alternative rock band from Romania, Timpuri noi came together in 1983 in Bucharest around core members Dan Iliescu, Adrian Pleșca and Răzvan Moldovan. They were influenced by acts like U2 or New Order and used subversive lyrics directed against the communist regime.

Remaining an underground act throughout the 80s, the band's style was still isolated in the Romanian rock music landscape until the late 90s. They grew to mainstream success after 1992, using a combination of funk metal and alternative with heavily satiric lyrics that dealt with the social realities of the transitioning working class.

In 1997 bass player Adrian Borțun quit the band and moved to Sarmalele Reci. After signing a highly lucrative promotional contract with Mediapro Music in 1997, Timpuri Noi disbanded in 2001: Artan went on to form Partizan and Dan Iliescu started Zidd. They re-formed in 2005 for a Best Of album. Artan left the band again in late 2009, citing creative differences.

Dan Iliescu continues with the band in various line-ups.
