Theodore Thomas (11 October 1835, Esens, East Friesland, Lower Saxony — 4 January 1905, Chicago, Illinois) was a German-American violinist, orchestrator, and distinguished conductor, best known as the principal conductor of The New York Philharmonic Orchestra (1877 to 1891) and the first musical director of [a=The Chicago Symphony Orchestra] (1891 to 1905).
