In 1955, high school students from Jamaica High School in Queens, New York, formed The Cleftones while initially aiming to write a campaign jingle. The group, initially called The Silvertones, gained local popularity by performing their version of "Gee," which helped their Independent Party win the school elections. They were later signed to Gee Records by George Goldner and officially became The Cleftones.
