New Zealand band formed in 1980. Several 7" singles and EPs led to the album Beaten Hearts (with Campbell McLay (b) and Malcolm Grant (dr) and Chris Knox and Mikie Dooley guesting), recorded August 1982, released commercially January 1983. Bill Direen forms South Indies Records the following year to archive post-punk independent music. Split Seconds, CoNCH3, Let's Play, Coolest Cats, Cup, Soluble Fish, "Bill Direen and Barry Stockley" and "Bill Direen and the Hat" follow. IMD release CUT CD in 1994 (with Derek Champion on drums and Alistair Galbraith guesting on violin). Corazoo release Human Kindness LP in 1997. Powertool release a string of CDs in 2006-2010. UNWUCHT re-rerelease the early EPs in 2010-2014. Grapefruit re-release Beatin Hearts in 2016, with a 7 inch EP 'Measly Love', then rerelease Split Seconds with Sophomore Lounge in 2023. Thokei Tapes releases the cassettes M.A.L.A. (Move Along Love Among) in 2021 and Mindful Expanded in 2023. Sophomore Lounge release the double LP OST to the documentary Bill Direen, A Memory of Others Builders in 2018. Builders may also be known as Bilders, Bilderbergers etc. See Aliases.
