Spontaneous Combustion

English progressive rock/hard rock trio that formed in 1971. The band featured [a368486] on drums, Gary Margetts on guitar/vocals and Gary's brother Tris Margetts on bass/vocals. Their talent was initially spotted by Greg Lake who took them to Harvest Records. In 1971 Harvest released their debut 7" single [m1034550]. This was followed a year later by their first self-titled album [m474999]. An effort typical of the time and genre with elaborate keyboard and guitar codas dominating, Lake himself served as the producer. A second album offered more of the same and was virtually ignored at the time of release though all Spontaneous Combustion’s records have become collectible since the wake of a nostalgia boom for the progressive era. The group’s final release under the Spontaneous Combustion name was the 1973 7" single [m546812]. In 1975 they released an album under the new band name of The Babys due to Spontaneous Combustion name legal complications. Afterwards their breakup, Margetts worked regularly alongside Lake while his brother dropped out of the music business entirely. Brock joined [a1448339] and then The Babys and in the 80s became part of Rod Stewart’s backing group.
