American band with Chicano and Pachuco roots and a style influenced by the doo wop era artists, such as The Penguins and Don & Dewey, mixed with the avantgarde of John Cage and Edgard Varèse.
Produced by Frank Zappa, the band's leader Ruben Ladron De Guevara replaced the mock 'Ruben Sano' identity created by Zappa on [m36745]. A chance meeting between Guevara & Zappa happened at The Shrine in 1969 and later, through friend Bob Harris, he met up again with Zappa in 1971 and auditioned the Ruben & The Jets line-up. Thus, the "For Real" title of the band's debut album on Mercury. The band briefly toured with Zappa in 1972 and also issued a second album on the label.
The 'Ruben' concept and a number of the band's musicians also interpolate through other Zappa works. A few singles off the [m36745] album were released under the Ruben And The Jets name and can be found under Ruben And The Jets
