American band with Chicano and Pachuco roots and a style influenced by the doo wop era artists, such as The Penguins and Don & Dewey, mixed with the avantgarde of John Cage and Edgard Varèse.
Produced by Frank Zappa, the band's leader [a1277301] replaced the mock 'Ruben Sano' identity created by Zappa on [m36745]. A chance meeting between Guevara & Zappa happened at The Shrine in 1969 and later, through friend [a256174], he met up again with Zappa in 1971 and auditioned the Ruben & The Jets line-up. Thus, the "For Real" title of the band's debut album on Mercury. The band briefly toured with Zappa in 1972 and also issued a second album on the label.
The 'Ruben' concept and a number of the band's musicians also interpolate through other Zappa works. A few singles off the [m36745] album were released under the Ruben And The Jets name and can be found under [a=Ruben And The Jets (4)]
