Rose Carter

US soprano vocalist, founding member of the [a=Chuck Wagon Gang]. Lola "Rose" Carter was the daughter of [a=D.P. Carter], an itinerant cotton farmer who in 1935 successfully auditioned with his son Ernest and daughter Lola for radio station KFYO in Lubbock, TX, in order to make enough money to buy medicine for their 18-year-old sister Effie, who was suffering from pneumonia. Once Effie had recovered, Lola, Effie, Ernest and their dad performed as the Carter Quartet, first for KFYO, then a year later for the larger station WBAP in Forth Worth, TX. At WBAP, they became the [a=Chuck Wagon Gang], and Lola acquired her stage name "Rose." Lola "Rose" Carter (married name: Karnes) performed as part of that group from 1936 to 1975.
