American actress, singer, musician and songwriter (mostly lyricist).
Born Doris Gislen in New York. Died: December 8, 1990 in New York, New York.
She wrote nearly all of her songs with her brother-in-law Phil Moody. Numerous songs of their collaborations were used in movies.
She started on stage at the age of three, and began performing with her sister Grace Moody as the Sherrell Babies then the Sherrell Kiddies then the Sherrell Sisters in the late 1920s on the Loews and RKO radio circuits. The sisters performed with Rudy Vallee, Ken Murray’s Blackouts and the singer Gene Austin. Pony Sherrell married Austin, and the Sherrell Sisters continued to perform with him. When the couple separated, the sisters moved to California to appear in Hollywood musicals.
The sisters got their first big break in 1944, when they starred as themselves in both Moon Over Las Vegas and Follow The Leader, alongside Austin.
She married singer/songwriter Gene Austin November 26, 1942. Pony and Phil Moody later wrote acts for top Las Vegas stars, such as Mae West.
