Irish folk band active 1972 - 1975, 1979 - 1983, and 2003 - 2005.
The original lineup of Christy Moore, Liam O'Flynn, Andy Irvine, and Donal Lunny came together in 1972 after working together on Moore's album Prosperous. Lunny left in September 1973, replaced by Johnny Moynihan. Moore left in October 1974, replaced by Paul Brady, who joined in September. This lineup toured through December 1975 but did not record in the studio.
Moore, O'Flynn, Irvine & Lunny reformed in June 1979 joined by flautist Matt Molloy, although he left shortly after. Concertina player Noel Hill and fiddler Tony Linnane joined the group on stage through early 1980, replaced by Keyboardist Bill Whelan and fiddler Nollaig Casey in the latter part of the year. Whelan later become a member of the band. Moore & Lunny left in early 1983. Irvine, O’Flynn and Whelan continued as Planxty, with fiddler James Kelly, guitar player Arty McGlynn, and singer Dolores Keane. This lineup toured until spring of 1983, but did not record.
The original lineup of Christy Moore, Liam O'Flynn, Andy Irvine, and Donal Lunny reunited from October 2003 to January 2005, playing live dates and releasing a live album and DVD.
