Orchestra Ethiopia

Instrumental, vocal, and dance ensemble founded in the early 60s at the then-Haile Selassie I University in Addis Ababa. The orchestra was made up of musicians from many different ethnic and regional Ethiopian musical traditions. [a930992] composed pieces for the orchestra to perform and introduced many innovations in the orchestra’s musical style. The orchestra was well known and toured the eastern United States under US Peace Corps sponsorship in 1969, but disbanded due to revolutionary political and financial pressures in 1975.
