American freestyle/R&B group fronted by husband-and-wife John Smith and Valerie Day, based in Portland, Oregon. The name came from the need to think of one prior to an early gig. Their first idea was to be the Shoes but when they discovered this name was taken the bass player said why not be New Shoes and spell it Nu Shooz to be more 'rock'.
