He was born in New Orleans. He moved to California as a teenager, where he studied trumpet with Dewey Johnson. In 1965 he moved to New York City and worked with Archie Shepp, Sun Ra, and Pharaoh Sanders. In October 1966 he recorded his first album on ESP Disk. In 1969 he moved with Frank Wright to Europe and played with Bobby Few, Jack Gregg, Wilber Morris, Kali Fasteau, Muhammad Ali as well as French musicians like François Tusques and Boulou Ferré. Frequenly he worked with Eve Packer.
