Brought to prominence with co-star Breno Mello by the film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) which the Academy Award for best foreign language film and the Palme d'Or at Cannes film festival. Manhã de Carnaval was actually recorded by the Brazilian singer Elizeth Cardoso and wrongly credited to Marpessa.
