Born in Danville, Kentucky
Moved to the Cleveland, Ohio area at some time during the 1960s and studied trumpet under Harry Herforth. His family then moved to central New York State (Syracuse) in 1969, and he studied trumpet with Rudolph Nashan.
Attended the undefined in 1972 to study with Melvyn Broiles of the The Metropolitan Opera House Orchestra. Eventually he left the Manhattan School of Music after his first year to go on the road with The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, conducted by Lee Castle.
