The orchestra of musicians employed by Japan's Imperial Household Agency. The Gakubu consists of approximately twenty-five court musicians, half of them from centuries old hereditary families. They perform gagaku (ancient court music) for public ceremonies and private rituals, as well as Western music. Often translated as the Music Department of the Imperial Household Agency.
