James is of Irish and Panamanian descent, achieving much success after DJ Gilles Peterson signed him to his new independent label Brownswood Recordings in the late 2000s.

He has also recorded tracks for many other artists, notably on Italian musician and producer Nicola Conte, on albums "Rituals" (2008) and "Free Souls" (2014), Jazzanova on album "Of All The Things" (2008), and Goldie on album "The Journey Man" (2017), among others.
