American Western Swing Ensemble formed in 1940 when Bob Wills split his group, Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys into two groups, and named Johnnie Lee Wills head of one of them. Bob led his group to California, and Johnnie Lee's group stayed based out of Oklahoma, taking over the Bob's spot on KVOO radio which they held until 1958. The group dissolved in 1964.
