A pilot by profession, Cagle was an amateur song writer for much of his life. His first big hit was "Christmas Time / Santa Claus, Jr." which got picked up in Billboard for before the Christmas of 1976 and found moderate success on regional radio after nearly placing twice in a national songwriting competition. The Cagles, who lived initially in Bunker Hill, Mississippi, ran a non-profit in Marion County called Teens, Inc., an interdenominational Christian youth camp. They later moved to Picayune, where Cagle found success for his Civil War tune, Vicksburg, in 1985.
