Jean-Pierre Hautier

Jean-Pierre Hautier (18 October 1955, Brussels, Belgium — 12 October 2012, ibid.), also known under his stage name Hugh Jempy, was a Belgian comedian, TV and radio presenter, producer, and broadcaster. As a musician, he was best known as one-half of the New Wave/synth/electro-pop novelty duo Zinno (active from 1985 to 1989). Hautier served as the president of La Première radio and was a long-running Eurovision Song Contest national commentator on Eurovision Song Contest between 1994 and 2007 (co-hosting the show with Marc Danval, Sandra Kim, and Jean-Louis Lahaye).

Hautier began his career in radio broadcasting after Marc Moulin (of Telex fame) hired him to work at Radio Cité in Brussels. In 1987, he debuted at La Semaine Infernale comedy program under his new alias, "Hugh Jempy," joining another prolific show, Le Jeu Des Dictionnaires, two years later (where he worked alongside Jacques Mercier, Philippe Geluck, Monsieur Météo, and Jean-Jacques Jespers). Despite his extensive involvement in comedy, mainstream entertainment, and "Euro-pop" dance-oriented music, J-P Hautier was notable for his diverse tastes and cultural background. He actively promoted classical music repertoire on Belgian television and radio; over the years, Hautier conducted numerous interviews with renowned musicians and writers, from Cecilia Bartoli to Umberto Eco.
