    American songwriter, arranger, and singer.


    DO NOT CONFUSE with film/TV composer Herbert W. Spencer.

    Born May 27, 1878 in Bunker Hill, Illinois, USA.
    Died August 26, 1944 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
    Spencer trained at the Leipzig Conservatory and took voice lessons with Enrico Caruso. He performed in vaudeville for 12 years. He also was the musical director for the Irish Village at the St. Louis World Fair in 1904 and sang as a soloist in a St. Louis church. For a while, he served as an accompanist for Ernestine Schumann-Heink.

    Spencer worked as a staff composer for a New York music publisher. His main collaborator was his wife, Fleta Jan Brown.

    Among the songs he wrote are ""Underneath the Stars," "Fancies," "East of the Moon, West of the Stars," "Heart's Desire," and "Prairie Flower."
