About

Also known as Hence Shepherd and, on his only solo release (Vocalion 5450, 1930), "The Appalachia Vagabond," brother of Bill Shepherd and Herb Shepherd.

Born around 1890, Hayes lived in Jenkins, Kentucky.

He played banjo in the classic Kentucky two-finger style and sang in the "high lonesome" sound that came to be associated with the area.

Between them the Shepherd brothers recorded ten sides for the Champion imprint of Gennett Records in 1932, but only two were issued.
