Noise rock/cow punk band from Houston, Texas. Active from around 1983 to 1988.
Don Walsh (guitar), Sibyl Chance (drums) and Bob Wilson (bass) started Grindin Teeth in 1983. Soon Matt Sargent joined on drums, and Chance moved to guitar. On the band’s first gig, a guy named [a=Kevin Jackson (14)] jumped up on stage and started doing improvised punk vocals, with lyrics about cows. He then joined the band full-time.
Wilson moved to New York in 1984, and Jackson took up his place as bassist, with Rick Tillinghast joining on electric fiddle. Between 1985 and 1987 the band played a lot of shows, opening for bands such as Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers, Pussy Galore, Meat Puppets and The Flaming Lips. In 1987 the band entered the studio and recorded a bunch of songs, that would remain unreleased until 2007.
In the beginning of 1988, Walsh and Chance wanted to play in a more noise-rock vein, and after Sargent left the group to start a surf-rock band (Tillinghast had also been playing in another band), the duo started Rusted Shut.
Grindin Teeth reunited in October 12, 2007 for an anniversary show. The line-up was Don Walsh (vocals, guitar), Kevin Jackson (bass, guitar), Bob "Byte" Wilson (bass) and Matt Sargent (drums).
