    American jazz writer, critic and occasional drummer.

    Born: May 9, 1912, in New York City, New York.
    Died: February 13, 2001, in New York City, New York.

    George began as drummer in the orchestra of Glenn Miller; subsequently he collaborated as music critic and writer for specialized magazines such as "[a=Metronome (19)]" (from 1939 to 1955), for which he was also editor; and for newspapers such as "New York Herald Tribune" and "New York Post." Author of music books such as "The Big Bands," "The Music Makers," "The Feeling of Jazz" (Simon and Shuster, 1961).

    Conceived the Metronome All Stars series and has been A&R compilation consultant for RCA.
