Indian classical vocalist of the Kirana gharana, born 5 March 1913 in Hangal, Karnataka, died 21 July 2009 in Hubli, Karnataka, India. She was known for her deep and powerful voice and gave concerts into her nineties.
Gangubai Hangal received a number of awards, among others Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan in 2002.
She's the mother of vocalist Krishna Hangal and tabla player Sheshgiri Hangal, who usually accompany their mother.
