American Delta blues guitarist and singer, variously billed as Papa Freddie or Mr. Freddie. He is generally regarded as the first Delta bluesman to be recorded. Born: December 28, 1893 in Lake Providence, Louisiana, United States. Died: June 19, 1956 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Spruell recorded for OKeh in 1926, for Paramount in 1928, and for Bluebird in 1935. Details of his life are sketchy and sometimes contradictory.
