Freddie Mitchell

US tenor saxophonist and composer (born April 8, 1918 in Orlando, Florida - died June 20, 2010 in Mount Vernon, Westchester, New York)

Grew up in Tampla, FL, where he performed as a blues pianist as early as age 13. Around 1931, however, his family moved to New York, NY. There Mitchell picked up clarinet and tenor sax; the latter became his main instrument.

In 1949, Mitchell formed his own band. It became the house band for the Derby (2) label that same year.
