Final Coil

Post-metal/Progressive Rock band from Leicester, UK. Formed in 2008. On January 16th 2024 Final Coil released their third album, The World We Inherited, through Sliptrick Records. Recorded at Parlour Studios with world renowned producer Russ Russell (Amorphis, The Wildhearts, Napalm Death etc), who, such was his enthusiasm for the project, also mixed and mastered the album, The World We Inherited is a monumental release that has received astounding levels of critical acclaim from music press around the world. Prog Magazine interviewed the band and named album track ‘Wires’ one of their Tracks Of The Week (alongside Ihsahn and Chelsea Wolfe) and Powerplay Rock & Metal Magazine awarded the album and its accompanying London launch show 9/10 reviews – hailing the “devastating majesty” of the album and the “burning energy and edge of danger” of the live show. Final Coil have come a long way over the last decade… The Leicester based band began their musical life in howls of feedback and chaos, a raging entity that tore up the stages of endless small clubs as they slowly found their direction. Over time it became clear that a fleeting impact wasn’t all they wished to achieve – they wanted to carve musical monuments that would stand the test of time and stand for something as well. Under the guiding hand of founding member Phil Stiles the line-up of the band morphed and shifted to reflect that change in focus and a brace of independently released EPs caught the ear of Italian record label WormHoleDeath, who immediately signed the band up. Throughout 2016 Final Coil worked on their debut full length album, which was then unveiled by their new label in 2017... Final Coil's debut album, entitled Persistence Of Memory is an island of colour and beauty in the ever flowing grey tides of modern life. A combination of musicianship, song craft, emotion and attention to detail that holds you transfixed while the rest of the world continues its unthinking charge into oblivion. An album where the lyrics invite thought and reflection and the artwork fires the imagination as the music brings it to vibrant life. To promote the album the band joined forces with Imperative PR and their enduring positive relationship with the music media began – Zero Tolerance Magazine describing Persistence Of Memory as possessing “too much awesomeness to mention”. With the promotional campaign for Persistence Of Memory proving such a success Final Coil signed a long term management contract with Imperative PR and the next chapter in their story began. In the late summer of 2018 Final Coil set off for Italy and Real Sound Studios to record their second full length album for WormHoleDeath. The World We Left Behind For Others was released on April 12th 2019 and it was a huge progression for the band. The sheer breadth of sound, the depth of the emotions captured and the free flowing creativity make this album utterly captivating and a wonderful achievement. The Metal Mag described the listening experience as “Like flying on top of the clouds…” 2019 also saw Final Coil play some of the most exciting live shows of their career to date, beginning with an appearance at the massive HRH Metal III: Metal Meltdown event at the O2 Academy in Birmingham, where they played alongside Decapitated, Devilment and many more, to a large and appreciative audience. Next up for the band was a place on the bill of the Fusion Festival 2019, which took place at the Stourhead Civic Centre on March 22nd – 24th and featured prog legends like Focus and IO Earth. Hot on the heels of these two major shows came two prestigious London dates, firstly with Japanese punk royalty Shonen Knife at the Underworld and then with the legendary Marky Ramone at The Garage. Before turning the page and moving on from The World We Left Behind For Others, Final Coil released the Convicted Of The Right EP - the title track taken from The World We Left Behind For Others being joined by three Final Coil classics recorded live at The Lab studios in London. Distorted Sound Magazine were among the media outlets that embraced Convicted Of The Right, praising the EP for doing “a great job of capturing some of the essence of their incredible live sound”. While Covid-19 did its best to derail Final Coil in 2020, the band simply found new ways to progress and impress. They were invited to take part in Fusion’s On-Line Christmas Cracker event in November of 2020, along with bands like Galahad and Pallas and rather than submit a standard set Final Coil were inspired to create something really special. They completely reimagined songs from their back catalogue, taking them into realms of sound that transformed each track - an endeavour very much in keeping with the festival’s progressive outlook. Such was the success of this project that Final Coil decided to expand upon it and create an album of old songs given a completely new lease of life, which was entitled Somnambulant II - a link back to one of the band’s earliest releases, the equally experimental Somnambulant EP of 2014. This remarkable new release emerged from its chrysalis via WormholeDeath on December 10th and was immediately hailed by The Razor’s Edge as “something a bit special”. Once we had all stepped out into the post lockdown world, blinking in the sunlight, it was time for Final Coil to turn their attention back to their third album. With this being a time of new beginnings the band decided, after seven successful years, to move on from WormHoleDeath, signing with international label Sliptrick Records for the release of the final part in the Persistence trilogy – The World We Inherited! And that is where we came in…
