Fan Houtens Kókó (named after the dutch chocolate and cocoa powder brand Van Houten's Cacao) was founded within the Medúsa art collective at the newly established Polytechnic School in Breiðholt, Reykjavík and first performed publicly at the school in February 1981. The members of the band, keyboardist Einar Arnaldur Melax, keyboardist Matthías Sigurður Magnússon, bassist Ólafur J. Engilbertsson and guitarist Þór Eldon originally founded the band to set their original poems to music. They all sang, but Matthías was the lead singer.
