German American film director, producer, writer and actor, born January 29, 1892 in Berlin, Germany, died November 30, 1947 in Los Angeles, California, USA. In 1946 he received an Honorary Academy Award and has been also nominated 3 times for Best Director. He gave the film industry "The Lubitsch Touch" - due to his sophisticated wit and style. The German "Ernst-Lubitsch-Preis" - for the best comedic performance in a German film - was named after him. The idea to create this prize came from Billy Wilder.
