Sheldon began in folk music at the age of 13, when he joined the American Folksay Group. He attended Brooklyn College.
For a time, Sheldon was a member of the singing group The Limeliters, following the departure of original member Glenn Yarbrough in the early 1960s, He recorded with Sheldon and James (with Joyce James of the Womenfolk) and several albums with the Limeliters. He was also an early editor of the old folk magazine Sing Out.
Sheldon charted as a songwriter nine times between 1965 and 1971 in the U.S. and once in the U.K. His top song was "Baby, the Rain Must Fall" by Glenn Yarbrough (co-written by Elmer Bernstein) in 1965, it hit #12 overall and #2 on the adult contemporary chart. His second highest charted song came in 1969, "Seattle" by Perry Como (co-written by Hugo Montenegro & Jack Keller); the song hit #38 overall and #2 adult contemporary.
